Ministers Apologize and Return £7,000 in Benefits to Elderly Woman with Dementia
Government addresses error in benefits overpayment to 93-year-old woman
Government ministers have formally apologized and repaid £7,000 to a 93-year-old woman with dementia who was wrongly held responsible for benefits overpayment debts.
The case, highlighted by the Guardian, revealed that the woman, under the care of her daughter Rose Chitseko, was overcharged due to an administrative error by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Despite Chitseko's compliance in providing necessary information, the DWP failed to cross-reference benefits, leading to overpayments.
The DWP is now exploring new ways to prevent such issues by sending notifications to carers.
The incident underscores the need for improved support and communication for unpaid carers managing benefits.
