Angela Rayner Secures Permanent Seat on UK National Security Council
Angela Rayner has been made a permanent member of the UK's National Security Council, solidifying her position following concerns of being sidelined. This change is part of a strategy by Downing Street to strengthen her role and address tensions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Rayner will now also deputize for Starmer at key events, marking a significant step in reinforcing her status within the government.
Angela Rayner, the UK's Deputy Prime Minister, has been confirmed as a permanent member of the UK government's National Security Council (NSC), following initial concerns that she was being sidelined.
This move, driven by Morgan McSweeney, the new No 10 chief of staff, aims to strengthen Rayner's role amidst reported tensions between her and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Rayner will also have an elevated presence by routinely deputizing for Starmer, such as in the upcoming Prime Minister's Questions session while Starmer is at a summit in Samoa.
The decision comes as part of a broader strategic effort by Downing Street to consolidate internal relations and ensure Rayner's contributions are fully recognized.
The NSC, which Rayner has joined permanently, includes key figures such as Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
This restructuring is seen by insiders as a necessary step to foster a more cohesive leadership team.
