James Cleverly’s Costly In-Flight Catering for Government Trips
James Cleverly, the former UK foreign secretary, faced scrutiny for spending six hundred fifty-five pounds a head on in-flight catering during a one-day trip to Rwanda. The purpose of the trip was to sign a deportation deal, which had been declared unsafe by the supreme court. Despite spending hundreds of millions on the Rwanda scheme, it yielded no successful deportations.
James Cleverly, the former UK foreign secretary, faced scrutiny for spending £655 per person on in-flight catering during a one-day trip to Rwanda in December.
This trip aimed to sign a deportation deal with Rwanda, which had been deemed 'unsafe' by the supreme court.
The total cost of the private jet flight to Kigali was £165,561, with the return catering costing £9,803.20 for Cleverly and his 14 officials.
A TV crew accompanying them covered their own catering.
A Freedom of Information request by the Labour party revealed this spending.
Cleverly, now shadow home secretary, also had significant catering costs during other diplomatic trips in 2023 to Japan, Papua New Guinea, and other countries, totaling over £22,324.50.
His successor, David Cameron, incurred similar expenses, with a £20,809 catering bill for trips in early 2024.
Such high expenses were disclosed by the Cabinet Office, showing details of ministerial journeys.
A Labour source criticized these expenses, highlighting that despite the £700m spent on the Rwanda scheme, it failed to stop small boat crossings or deportations.
