RAF Typhoon Intercepts Air India Flight After Bomb Threat
An Air India flight from Mumbai to London received a bomb threat, leading the Royal Air Force to scramble a Typhoon jet to intercept the aircraft. After an uneventful interception, the flight safely continued to London Heathrow. The sonic boom heard in East Anglia was confirmed by Norfolk Police to be from RAF aircraft, not an explosion.
The Royal Air Force scrambled a Typhoon fighter jet on Thursday to intercept an Air India flight bound for London following a bomb threat.
The plane, traveling from Mumbai, received the threat, prompting immediate response from RAF Coningsby.
A spokesperson for the Royal Air Force confirmed that Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon aircraft were deployed to investigate the civilian aircraft.
The interception was uneventful, and the flight was allowed to continue to its destination at London Heathrow Airport under civilian air traffic control.
As the jets were dispatched, a loud sonic boom was heard across the East Anglia region of England due to their supersonic transit.
Norfolk Police clarified the noise was a sonic boom from RAF aircraft, not an explosion.
Civilian authorities are now handling the incident.
