AI Unveils 300 New Nazca Lines Including Mysterious Orca
Researchers have discovered 303 new Nazca Lines in Peru using artificial intelligence, including a 'knife-wielding orca' and other fascinating shapes. The discovery, made by scientists from IBM and Yamagata University, helps further unravel the mysteries of the ancient Nazca civilization. These geoglyphs, created between 200 BC and 500 AD, add to our understanding of this enigmatic art.
Scientists have long been fascinated by the Nazca Lines in southern Peru, ancient geoglyphs discovered almost a century ago.
Recently, researchers using artificial intelligence uncovered 303 new figures, including a 'knife-wielding orca,' cats, camels, and even shapes resembling the Pixar character Wall-E.
These geoglyphs, believed to have been created by the pre-Incan Nazca civilization between 200 BC and 500 AD, add to the enigma of the region.
The discovery was made by scientists at the IBM Thomas J Watson Research Centre in New York and Yamagata University in Japan, and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
This AI-driven model identified the geoglyphs after being trained on images of existing ones, confirmed through on-site visits by experts.
The faint lines mainly depict humans and animals, but some are abstract.
The team plans to continue using AI in their ongoing exploration of this ancient art.
