The cost of funding the UK monarchy through the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant is set to rise by over 53%, increasing by £45 million, from £86.3 million in 2024-25 to £132 million in 2025-26, due to huge profits from the Crown Estate.
An anti-monarchy group, Republic, estimates the ‘true cost’ to exceed £500 million annually, citing high expenditure on royal security and unused potential of royal residences.
The extra funds will be directed to a £369 million renovation of Buckingham Palace, prompting calls for budget cuts from Republic's CEO, Graham Smith.
