UK and Ukraine Sign 100-Year Partnership Agreement
The treaty strengthens ties in security, science, energy, and trade, enhancing collaboration between the two nations.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a landmark '100-Year Partnership' agreement in Kyiv on January 16, 2025. The treaty, aimed at deepening bilateral ties, focuses on collaboration in security, science, energy, and trade.
Key components of the agreement include enhanced military cooperation to bolster security in the Baltic, Black, and Azov Seas, and to deter potential threats from Russian aggression.
The UK also pledged to supply Ukraine with a mobile air defense system tailored to its specific requirements.
Both leaders highlighted the strong bond between their nations, with Zelenskyy describing the day as 'historic' and Starmer emphasizing the UK's commitment to Ukraine's safety and future.
This agreement builds on prior bilateral treaties from 2020 and 2024, further expanding areas of cooperation, particularly in maritime security and technological advancement.
Since 2022, following renewed Russian aggression, the UK has significantly increased its military aid to Ukraine, including training over fifty thousand Ukrainian soldiers, providing lethal arms, and committing financial assistance totaling approximately twelve point eight billion pounds (around sixteen billion dollars).
The partnership reflects the evolving and deepening relationship between the two nations since the UK recognized Ukraine’s independence in 1991. It marks a continued commitment to mutual support and collaboration in addressing regional and global challenges.
