Romanian Gang Convicted of Human Trafficking and Exploitation in Dundee
Five individuals found guilty in Glasgow High Court as Police Scotland cracks down on human trafficking and drug-fueled exploitation
A Romanian gang has been convicted of human trafficking and sexual exploitation offences following an extensive investigation by Police Scotland.
The individuals, identified as Marian Cumpanasoiu, 37, Remus Stan, 34, Calalan Dobre, 44, Cristian Urlanteanu, 41, and Alexandra Bugonea, 34, targeted vulnerable women in Dundee, using drugs as a means of control.
On Thursday, the High Court in Glasgow delivered the verdict against the group, culminating a concerted effort by law enforcement to tackle human trafficking networks operating within Scotland.
This criminal enterprise was dismantled as part of Operation Recloir, which commenced in 2021.
According to Detective Inspector Scott Carswell, the initial investigation examined local brothels and the potential trafficking of Romanian women into Scotland.
However, over the summer of 2022, police expanded their inquiry as new information emerged regarding the gang's activities.
Sources indicated that the group was engaging in predatory tactics to groom local women in Dundee, offering them Class A drugs as 'gifts' to entrap them.
Detector Inspector Carswell elaborated on the group's methods to Sky News, noting that once the women were dependent on the drugs, they were coerced into participating in sexual activities to maintain their access to substances.
'This unfortunate cycle of addiction reinforced the gang's control over the victims,' Carswell stated.
In response to these crimes, Police Scotland has been collaborating with the victims to offer necessary support services, aiming to ensure their long-term welfare and protection from further exploitation.
The guilty verdict marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against human trafficking and sexual exploitation, underscoring Scotland's commitment to confronting these heinous activities within its borders.
The convicted individuals await their sentencing, which is due to be determined in the near future, as law enforcement continues efforts to dismantle similar networks and offer aid to those affected by such crimes.
