British Hiker Found Deceased Amidst Dolomites Search: Investigation Underway

The discovery during the search for Sam Harris and Aziz Ziriat highlights ongoing challenges in the mountainous region.
A body, identified as Sam Harris, a 35-year-old British hiker, has been found in the Italian Dolomites after he and fellow Londoner Aziz Ziriat, 36, went missing at the start of the New Year.

The two experienced hikers were reported missing after failing to check in for their return flight back to the United Kingdom on January 6.

The last known whereabouts of the pair was near the Casina Dosson mountain hut, close to the town of Tione Di Trento, near Lake Garda.

Search and rescue operations have been ongoing in this region, known for both its beautiful and treacherous terrains, especially during winter months when weather conditions can severely impede rescue efforts.

Italy’s National Alpine Cliff and Cave Rescue Corps (CNSAS) confirmed the discovery of Mr. Harris’s body, found in an area known as Passo di Conca, buried under snow.

The CNSAS, along with other teams including the Guardia di Finanza Rescue, the Carabinieri, and local fire brigades, faced significant obstacles due to severe weather conditions throughout the search, which involved both ground teams and helicopters equipped with electronic scanners to detect signals from mobile devices.

Friends and family of both men rallied support on social media to gather more information and assistance after alarm bells were raised due to their failure to board their return flight.

Joe Stone, a university friend of Mr. Ziriat, spoke to the PA news agency highlighting their proficiency and experience as hikers, as well as their tendency to venture off the grid.

A signal from one of the men's mobile phones eventually led rescuers to locate Mr. Harris.

Their personal belongings, including backpacks and sleeping bags, were earlier discovered near the Malga Dosson refuge, providing initial clues to their last movements.

The search for Mr. Ziriat continues as families remain informed and hopeful despite the mounting challenges.

Italian authorities have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.

Sam Harris's passing has deeply affected those who knew him and has been publicly mourned by organizations such as Palace For Life, Crystal Palace FC's official charity, which expressed heartfelt condolences to his family via social media.

Meanwhile, efforts to locate Aziz Ziriat persist, with teams employing both on-foot searches and sniffer dogs to cover the expansive mountainous terrain.
