GfK's Consumer Confidence Index dropped seven points in September to minus 20, signaling concerns about personal finances and the general economy.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer have warned of a £22 billion deficit, leading to a potentially painful budget on October 30.

Measures already implemented include cuts to winter fuel payments and public sector pay adjustments.

The latest data shows £13.7 billion in net borrowing in August, driven by increased public spending.

Retail sales volumes rose by 1% in August due to supermarket promotions and clothing discounts.

Consumer insights director Neil Bellamy cautioned that despite stable inflation, the lack of consumer confidence poses a significant challenge to economic growth.
