Final Consultation Launched for Vyrnwy Frankton Power Line Project
Green GEN Cymru initiates last public consultation for proposed 31-mile power line connecting Wales to Shropshire.
Green GEN Cymru has commenced the final public consultation for its Vyrnwy Frankton Project, a proposed 31-mile (50-kilometer) power line designed to connect a new substation near Cefn Coch in Powys, Wales, to the national grid at Lower Frankton in Shropshire, England.
The project aims to facilitate the transmission of renewable energy generated in Mid Wales to the broader UK electricity network.
The proposed infrastructure includes a 132kV overhead line supported by 27-meter tall steel lattice pylons, as well as underground cables in specific sections to mitigate visual and environmental impacts.
The consultation period runs from 19 February to 16 April 2025, during which six public events will be held across village halls and community centers in both Wales and Shropshire.
Attendees will have the opportunity to view a digital 3D model of the proposed route and provide feedback.
North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan has urged the company to consider undergrounding the entire route, citing concerns over visual and noise impacts on local communities.
In response, Senior Project Manager Sean Taylor stated that the project team has carefully considered areas important for tourism and recreation, aiming to minimize effects on the landscape and environment.
He emphasized that the project remains open to influence and that Green GEN Cymru is committed to working closely with communities and stakeholders.
The company has also highlighted that, beyond delivering clean energy, the Vyrnwy Frankton Project could stimulate local investment, support job creation, and enhance skills development in the region.
The project is currently in the pre-application phase, with a formal planning application expected to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in the fourth quarter of 2025.
