Bangor University Announces Plans to Cut 200 Jobs Amid £15 Million Savings Target
Financial pressures prompt significant workforce reduction; University of South Wales also affected
Bangor University has unveiled plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 200 positions as part of an initiative to achieve £15 million in savings.
Vice-Chancellor Edmund Burke communicated to staff that the institution is facing financial challenges due to a decline in international student enrollment, increased operational costs, and recent changes to national insurance contributions imposed by the UK government.
The university, which serves around 10,000 students and employs approximately 650 academic staff, has initiated a voluntary redundancy scheme open to both academic and non-academic personnel.
However, the possibility of compulsory redundancies has not been ruled out.
In a related development, the University of South Wales has announced intentions to eliminate 90 jobs, citing similar financial strains.
These announcements occur amidst a broader trend of financial difficulties within UK higher education institutions, with several universities, including Cardiff University, also planning significant job cuts.
