Dutch Foreign Ministry Summons Israeli Ambassador Over ICC Spying Allegations
The Dutch foreign ministry called in Israel’s ambassador, Modi Ephraim, over allegations of Israeli intelligence spying on the ICC. This follows a nine-year investigative report revealing an espionage campaign. Dutch MPs demand an investigation as the Netherlands has a duty to protect the ICC's independence and security.
The Dutch foreign ministry has called in Israel’s ambassador, Modi Ephraim, to discuss allegations of a covert surveillance and espionage campaign against the International Criminal Court (ICC) by Israeli spy services.
This move follows an investigative report by The Guardian, in collaboration with +972 Magazine and Local Call, revealing that Israeli intelligence agencies targeted the ICC chief prosecutor's office for nine years.
The Netherlands, as the ICC host state, is obligated to ensure the court’s security and independence.
Earlier this October, Dutch MPs raised questions in parliament regarding the findings, prompting the meeting disclosure.
Kati Piri, a Green-Labour alliance MP, urged for an investigation into the Israeli embassy’s involvement and emphasized the Netherlands' duty to shield the ICC from intimidation.
The foreign ministry opposes any threats against the ICC and maintains regular security discussions with the court.
The inquiry coincides with the ICC considering arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar filed by ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan.
