LONDON: Five additional police officers are now suspected of betting on the timing of the UK general election, according to a Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has withdrawn support from two Conservative candidates, Craig Williams and Laura Saunders, amid the controversy.
The Gambling Commission informed the Met Police that five more officers and a member of Sunak’s protection team had allegedly gambled on the election date.
The protection officer, who was arrested on misconduct suspicions, has been placed on restricted duties.
Sunak is struggling to close a 21-point poll deficit to Labour's Keir Starmer before the July 4 election.
Meanwhile, Labour has suspended Kevin Craig, its candidate for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, following a Gambling Commission inquiry.
