Independent Investigation Launched into Death of Man in Police Custody in South London
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is examining circumstances surrounding the death of a 45-year-old man after police intervention.
An investigation has been launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 45-year-old man who suffered a medical emergency while being restrained by police in South London.
The incident occurred on Sunday, February 16, 2020, following reports of a child being assaulted inside a residential property on High Street, South Norwood.
Upon arrival, police attempted to engage with the man, who they report actively resisted their efforts.
He was restrained, handcuffed, and subsequently taken to the hospital after his condition deteriorated.
Emergency services were called, and he was transported to the hospital by ambulance at 1:27 am.
Despite medical intervention, he was pronounced dead at around 3:40 am.
The IOPC confirmed that a post-mortem examination has already taken place, and they are awaiting further test results.
The man has not yet been formally identified.
Body-worn video footage from the incident shows the man resisting police efforts prior to his restraint and subsequent medical emergency.
IOPC Director Amanda Rowe expressed condolences to the man’s family and friends, acknowledging the concerns that will arise from his death while in police custody.
She assured the public that the IOPC will conduct a thorough, independent investigation into the events leading up to his death.
The IOPC has reached out to the man’s partner to inform them of their investigative role and to provide updates as the inquiry progresses.
