Former aide reveals Prince William's emotional challenges amid cancer diagnoses of family members.
Jason Knauf, a former chief executive of the Royal Foundation, has disclosed that
Prince William experienced significant emotional distress after learning of his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and his father, King Charles III's cancer diagnoses.
In an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Knauf remarked that the situation was 'awful' and noted that it represented a low point for the royal.
He stated, 'Within a couple of weeks, if you're
Prince William, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer.
I couldn't believe it.'
Both the King and the Princess received cancer treatment last year, with Kate currently reported to be in remission and King Charles undergoing continuing treatment.
Knauf shared that Catherine's diagnosis was publicly revealed in March of the previous year, and the family faced challenges in determining how to communicate their health struggles, particularly to their children.
Prince William has openly discussed the difficulties he encountered throughout the past year, labeling it as 'the hardest year' of his life.
He stated, 'It’s been dreadful.
It’s probably been the hardest year in my life.
So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.'
Knauf's tenure with the royal family ended in late 2021 after having served not only William and Kate but also Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
He gained notoriety in October 2018 when he lodged a bullying complaint against Meghan, expressing concerns about the treatment of staff, which her legal team has denied.
Reflecting on William's relationship with Harry, Knauf emphasized the challenge of public scrutiny, acknowledging the sadness surrounding the situation for those who know both princes.
'It’s very difficult to have this stuff play out in the public eye,' he commented.
'But he’s chosen to keep his thoughts on it private.'
Additionally, Knauf was recognized for his service by being appointed a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order as part of the 2023 New Year Honours List.
His professional background includes various roles, ranging from governmental positions in New Zealand to significant corporate responsibilities in the UK. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Earthshot Prize, a £50 million initiative aimed at promoting environmental solutions.
