Japanese Police Academies Implement Makeup Training for Male Recruits

Police academies in Fukushima and Yamaguchi have introduced makeup courses to improve the professional appearance of their recruits.
In a forward-thinking initiative regarding grooming and professionalism, Japanese police academies are now providing makeup training for male cadets.

The Fukushimaken Keisatsugakko in Fukushima Prefecture launched this course in January 2023 for 60 cadets, including those nearing graduation.

The program has attracted significant attention both locally and on social media.

The training covers essential makeup skills such as applying eyebrow pencils, moisturizing skin, and utilizing primers.

Cadets also learn grooming techniques that include eyebrow trimming and hairstyling.

The renowned Japanese cosmetics brand Shiseido is partnering with the academy to deliver a high-quality educational experience.

Takeshi Sugiura, vice-principal of the Fukushimaken Keisatsugakko, noted that police officers frequently engage with a variety of community members, necessitating a tidy and professional appearance.

Sugiura underscored the importance of the program, stating, "We aim to remind students that as both community members and future police officers, it is vital to maintain an appropriate appearance."

Cadet feedback has been mixed.

One male cadet remarked, "I’ve never worn makeup before. I think that being a police officer often places you in the public spotlight, so I want to make sure I represent myself well when going to work."

The introduction of makeup training has elicited varied responses on Japanese social media.

Some users made playful comments, while others showed support for the program.

Reactions included humorous observations about the potential relevance of makeup in policing situations, as well as more affirmative remarks on the significance of grooming for all officers.

Traditionally, police training in Japan has focused primarily on physical prowess and legal knowledge, but the addition of these courses signals a shift toward encouraging respectful interactions with the community.

Another police academy in Yamaguchi has likewise implemented similar courses aimed at teaching male cadets appropriate skincare and face cleansing techniques.
