UK House of Commons Votes to Legalise Assisted Dying
New bill permits medically assisted death for terminally ill adults
The UK House of Commons today passed the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill by 314 votes to 291, enabling mentally competent terminally ill adults in England and Wales with under six months to live to request medically assisted death under strict safeguards.
The legislation requires approval from two independent doctors and oversight by a three-person expert panel, eliminating the need for High Court involvement and ensuring protection against coercion.
The bill now proceeds to the House of Lords for further review before potentially becoming law by 2029.
