UK government sets out plans for ‘biggest nuclear power expansion in 70 years’
The UK government aims to launch its largest nuclear expansion in 70 years, with plans to construct a series of reactors to supply a quarter of the country's electricity by 2050.
Despite significant delays and escalating costs, there's a strategy to approve new reactors biennially from 2030 onwards, supplementing existing projects like Hinkley Point C. Current nuclear plants are underperforming with closures and extended maintenance.
The government bets on nuclear power for a sustainable, secure energy future and job creation. However, skeptics from ECIU and Greenpeace question nuclear's financial viability and timeliness compared to renewable alternatives.
