Simon Case Rejoins Garrick Club Amid Mixed Reactions
Simon Case, head of the civil service, has rejoined the Garrick Club six months after he resigned due to its previously men-only policy. The club allowed female members this year but has only admitted two women so far. Case’s return has raised questions about his commitment to gender equality, as other clubs in London also face pressure to admit women members.
Simon Case, head of the civil service, has rejoined the Garrick Club six months after resigning amid controversy.
The club, which permitted female members this year, has only accepted two women, actors Dame Siân Phillips and Dame Judi Dench, among its 1,500 men.
Case had initially quit following public criticism linked to the club’s men-only policy in March but has now returned with permission to retract his resignation post-vote for female inclusion.
Richard Moore, MI6 chief, has not rejoined.
The decision has attracted criticism from equality advocates, including King’s College’s Prof Rosie Campbell, who questioned the sincerity of Case's resignation.
The debate continues to impact other London clubs like the Savile and Flyfishers’ Club, as they reconsider joining the movement to admit women.
