Monster Hurricane Beryl Hits Caribbean as Category Five Storm
Hurricane Beryl has become a category five storm, wreaking havoc across the southeastern Caribbean. With 150mph winds, the storm caused extensive damage, including uprooted trees, downed power lines, and demolished roofs. It is expected to bring life-threatening conditions to Jamaica and possibly weaken to a category one storm as it moves towards Mexico.
Hurricane Beryl has been upgraded to a catastrophic category five storm as it slammed into the southeastern Caribbean, causing widespread damage.
Early Monday, the storm ripped roofs off buildings, uprooted trees, and downed electricity lines across several islands.
Reports indicate winds reached up to 150mph, prompting closures of schools, businesses, airports, and government offices, as officials warn of potential power outages and water cuts.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami stated Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surges to Jamaica later this week.
This is the earliest in the year such a strong storm has formed in the Atlantic, beating the previous record held by Hurricane Dennis in July 2005.
Grenada's national disaster co-ordinator, Terence Walters, reported devastation in Carriacou and the surrounding islands.
Similarly, Grenada's prime minister Dickon Mitchell noted significant damage to a hospital's roof, leading to patient evacuations.
In St Vincent and the Grenadines, communication networks have collapsed, with churches and schools losing roofs.
Barbados also reported roof damage and downed electricity lines.
Officials are using drones to assess the damage once the storm passes.
Meanwhile, storm warnings and hurricane watches have been issued for several other Caribbean islands, including St Lucia, Martinique, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.
Scientists like Christopher Rozoff from the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research link the increasing intensity and frequency of such storms to climate change.
After impacting the Caribbean, Beryl is expected to weaken as it moves south of Jamaica towards Mexico as a category one storm.
