Lidl, one of the UK's leading supermarkets, plans to equip its staff with body cameras in an effort to combat a surge in shoplifting and violence towards workers. The supermarket chain is investing £2 million to roll out this security measure across all its stores.
While Lidl claims to be the first UK supermarket to introduce body cameras for its employees, it clarified that not all staff members would be required to wear them.
The move comes amid a reported increase in shoplifting in the UK, with a 27% rise in retail crime and £2.8 billion in losses from customer theft in the last financial year.
Experts suggest that other stores may follow suit in adopting similar measures to prevent thefts. The reasons for the spike in shoplifting are debated, but factors such as the cost of living crisis and organized crime gangs have been cited as contributing factors.
