For many years, Google has spotlighted important cultural events within its calendar app to enhance user awareness.
However, users have recently noted that these observances are no longer displayed.
A Google representative stated that these changes were implemented for non-political reasons, elaborating that the manual upkeep of cultural observances across various countries was not feasible or practical. The statement mentioned that Google had previously showcased a broader spectrum of cultural moments but received input regarding missing events, prompting a shift to focus on public holidays and national observances derived from timeanddate.com.
Beginning in mid-2024, users will exclusively view these official observances, but they will still have the option to manually add other important dates.
The Google Calendar application is employed by over 500 million individuals globally for various personal and professional needs.
This policy change arrives amid broader transformations in corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies, especially considering the evolving political climate in the United States.
In February 2023, Alphabet, Google's parent company, declared the cessation of specific DEI hiring targets designed to enhance employee representation from marginalized groups.
Moreover, there has been a reevaluation of different DEI programs within the organization, reflecting an adaptation to the recent alterations in U.S. government policies.
Fiona Cicconi, Alphabet's chief people officer, indicated that as a federal contractor, Google needs to assess its initiatives in line with recent court rulings and executive orders.
Adding complexity to the company's environment, it was reported in January 2023 that the name of the Gulf of Mexico would be changed to the 'Gulf of America' following an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump.
These changes regarding Google’s calendar features and its recruitment policies demonstrate a subtle recalibration within the company in response to broader socio-political dynamics.
