President Trump began his remarks by highlighting what he termed significant achievements of his administration, asserting that they had reached an unprecedented level of success in a brief period.
"America’s momentum, spirit, pride, and confidence have returned," he declared, adding, "The American dream is thriving bigger and better than ever before.
It is unstoppable, and our nation is on the brink of a comeback unlike anything the world has ever seen."
A pivotal moment in the address came when Trump shared a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed willingness to resume negotiations after a previous encounter in the Oval Office had derailed peace talks with Russia.
Trump cited Zelensky's letter, which conveyed a readiness to collaborate under his leadership to ensure lasting peace and acknowledged America’s support for Ukraine's sovereignty.
Zelensky also indicated the intent to finalize a minerals agreement with the US, stating, "We are prepared to sign it whenever it is convenient for you."
The President commented on the letter, remarking that signals from Russia suggested a readiness for peace talks, saying, "Wouldn’t that be wonderful?" He indicated that both Russia and Ukraine might be nearer to resolving the conflict, despite earlier negotiation challenges.
Transitioning to domestic policy, Trump criticized several nations for what he deemed unfair trade practices against the United States, specifically naming the European Union, India, Mexico, and Brazil.
He announced his intention to implement reciprocal tariffs beginning April 2, stating, "Whatever they impose on us, we will impose on them," stressing that the US has traditionally maintained lower tariffs than many trading partners.
After imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada earlier this week, both countries responded with retaliatory actions, raising concerns about the potential for a significant trade dispute that could affect consumer prices.
Trump asserted that his administration's stringent approach to tariffs would strengthen the economy and manufacturing, particularly highlighting the auto sector's growth since his election.
On the issue of drug trafficking, Trump acknowledged Mexico’s attempts to extradite cartel leaders but called for more robust action against fentanyl smuggling, urging Congress to back enhanced border security measures.
The President reiterated his contentious interest in acquiring Greenland, referencing earlier proposals from his first term.
He framed the potential acquisition as a means to bolster US national security.
Trump conveyed optimism about the plausibility of this goal, stating, "I believe we’re going to achieve it," while also suggesting that such moves would benefit both the US and Greenland economically.
Additionally, he expressed a desire to "reclaim" the Panama Canal, hinting at ambitious foreign policy ambitions.
Outside the Capitol during Trump’s address, protests took place, with demonstrators supporting Ukraine gathering in Washington, and large crowds rallying at Fox News headquarters in New York.
