Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is recruiting 100 specialists to combat people-smuggling gangs as part of new immigration control measures. The National Crime Agency will lead these efforts, aiming to disrupt organized crime networks. Despite stepped-up enforcement, 36,000 asylum seekers remain in unsuitable hotel accommodations, costing five point three million pounds each day.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced plans to recruit 100 investigators and intelligence officers to target people-smuggling gangs.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) will lead efforts to dismantle these networks, following a surge in political focus on immigration due to recent far-right riots.
The Home Office aims to achieve the highest deportation rates since 2018 and launch a new intelligence-driven illegal working programme.
Recent efforts have included nine return flights for refused asylum seekers, and 300 caseworkers have been reassigned to increase removals.
Bas Javid, the Home Office’s director general for immigration enforcement, oversees the strategy.
The NCA is currently leading 70 investigations into major smuggling and trafficking groups.
Additional staff are being recruited and stationed across Europe to collaborate with European agencies.
Despite these efforts, 36,000 asylum seekers still live in unsuitable hotel rooms, costing five point three million pounds each day.
More than 200 people crossed to the UK via small boats on Monday, bringing the total for the year just under 20,000.
