UK Government Introduces Bill to Ban Rental Bidding Wars
The UK government has introduced a bill to ban landlords in England and Wales from engaging in rental bidding wars. This renters' rights bill also includes measures like banning no-fault evictions and preventing arbitrary within-tenancy rent hikes. Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook stated that the bill aims to balance the dynamics between landlords and tenants, providing long-awaited protections.
Landlords in England and Wales will no longer be able to rent properties for higher than their advertised prices under a new renters' rights bill introduced by the UK government.
This reform aims to curb rising rents that contribute to the housing crisis.
The bill also includes an immediate ban on no-fault evictions, restrictions on barring tenants from having pets, and mandates a four-month notice for evictions related to property sales or family housing needs.
There's also a provision preventing rent increases in the first year and a requirement for a two-month notice before rent hikes.
Matthew Pennycook, the housing minister, emphasized the bill's intention to level the playing field between landlords and tenants.
