Jared Isaacman launched Polaris Dawn with a SpaceX crew, aiming for the first privately funded spacewalk. The mission will orbit up to 870 miles above Earth, and Isaacman and Gillis will conduct a two-hour spacewalk in upgraded EVA suits. This groundbreaking mission advances commercial space exploration and tests critical technology for future missions to Mars.
Billionaire Jared Isaacman has launched the Polaris Dawn mission aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, aiming to accomplish the first privately funded spacewalk.
The mission includes crew members Scott 'Kidd' Poteet, Anna Menon, and Sarah Gillis, who will orbit up to 870 miles above Earth in the spacecraft Resilience.
The mission will traverse the Van Allen belt, exposing the crew to controlled radiation levels for study.
On the third day, Isaacman and Gillis will undertake a two-hour spacewalk in upgraded extravehicular activity (EVA) suits, despite Resilience lacking an airlock.
The mission will break new ground in commercial spaceflight, testing spacesuit versatility and contributing to long-term goals for human exploration of Mars.
