First UK Evacuation Flight Departs Middle East After Lengthy Delay

Government-chartered aircraft finally leaves Oman carrying British nationals as London begins large-scale effort to bring citizens home from a region destabilised by conflict.
The first United Kingdom government-chartered evacuation flight carrying British nationals out of the Middle East has departed from Oman after significant delays, marking the start of a large repatriation effort amid escalating regional tensions.

The aircraft took off from Muscat after being grounded overnight due to operational problems that prevented passengers from boarding on schedule.

Officials had initially planned for the flight to leave on Wednesday, but the departure was postponed until the following day as crews worked to resolve logistical issues at the airport.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that the flight had finally departed, describing the evacuation as part of one of the largest operations of its kind undertaken by the United Kingdom in recent years.

The government has begun coordinating charter flights and working with airlines to expand capacity for British citizens seeking to return home.

The evacuation effort comes as conflict and military activity across the region disrupt air travel and close large sections of Middle Eastern airspace.

Airports across the Gulf have experienced widespread cancellations and severe reductions in commercial flights, leaving thousands of foreign nationals stranded or struggling to find routes out of the region.

Officials estimate that more than one hundred forty thousand British nationals are currently registered with the Foreign Office as being in Middle Eastern countries, with the largest number located in the United Arab Emirates.

The government has indicated that additional evacuation flights will follow as part of a broader effort to help vulnerable citizens leave areas affected by the crisis.

Passengers on the delayed flight reported long waits at Muscat airport before departure, reflecting the logistical challenges involved in organising emergency evacuations during a rapidly evolving regional conflict.

Authorities acknowledged the difficulties but said teams on the ground were working continuously to assist travellers and prioritise those most in need of support.

While charter flights are being arranged, officials have also advised British citizens to use commercial routes whenever possible, as airlines gradually restore limited services from certain regional hubs.

The government continues to coordinate closely with international partners and aviation authorities to establish safe corridors for travellers.

The departure of the first evacuation flight provides a measure of relief for those attempting to leave the region, though officials caution that the broader operation is likely to continue for days as travel disruption across the Middle East persists.
