Winter Fuel Payments Axed for Millions of Pensioners
Around ten million pensioners will lose their winter fuel payments between one hundred and three hundred pounds under new plans announced by the Chancellor. From this autumn, only those on pension credit or other means-tested benefits will receive these payments. Several infrastructure projects, including a Stonehenge road tunnel, are also cancelled. Public sector pay rises are accepted, costing an additional nine point four billion pounds, with three billion pounds in departmental savings required. Disputes arise over previous government overspending claims.
Around ten million pensioners will lose their winter fuel payments between one hundred and three hundred pounds under new plans announced by the Chancellor.
From this autumn, only those on pension credit or other means-tested benefits will receive these payments.
Several infrastructure projects, such as a Stonehenge road tunnel and a bypass on the A27, are also cancelled, along with plans for 40 new hospitals in England.
Public sector pay recommendations are accepted, offering pay rises between 4.75% and 22%, costing an additional nine point four billion pounds.
To offset this, departments must find a combined three billion pounds in savings.
Disputes arise over previous government overspending claims, with mixed responses from economists and politicians.
