UK Disaster Emergency Committee Appeals for Myanmar Earthquake Relief Raises £7.5 Million
First-day fundraising efforts supported by royal donations and matched government funds amid ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The UK’s Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) launched an urgent fundraising appeal in response to the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, raising £7.5 million on its first day.
Prominent contributions include donations from King Charles III and Queen Camilla, underscoring their ongoing support for humanitarian efforts.
The DEC's appeal is bolstered by the UK government's UK Aid Match scheme, which will match public donations up to £5 million.
The appeal, which involves a coalition of 15 UK aid agencies including the British Red Cross, Oxfam, and Save the Children, aims to address the urgent needs of thousands injured and displaced following the earthquake.
As reported by the military government of Myanmar, more than 3,100 individuals have died, and over 4,500 have sustained injuries due to the disaster.
In the wake of the disaster, the DEC has been broadcasting television and radio appeals to raise awareness and encourage donations.
Saleh Saeed, the chief executive of the DEC, expressed gratitude for the public's generosity, highlighting the tragic stories emerging from survivors who have escaped collapsed infrastructures.
Reports indicate that many children have lost their families, substantial numbers are facing life-changing injuries, and countless more individuals have had their homes and possessions destroyed.
Aid provided by DEC member charities is already reaching affected individuals, but additional funds will enable them to assist more families and children in need of critical support.
