Paraguay’s president, Santiago Peña, has been removed from office and arrested shortly afterwards, following the collapse of a state-owned bank that left roughly half the country’s population without their savings.

All 44 senators who voted backed his removal, making the decision unanimous. The parliamentary action was followed by Peña’s arrest by local police on suspicion of offences including breach of trust and abuse of power.

The bank’s collapse has combined widespread personal financial losses with the removal of the president and a criminal case against him. These are distinct developments: the Senate’s vote removed Peña from office, while the suspicions underlying his arrest remain allegations rather than findings of guilt.
