The comments came after Phillips rejected a request for a government-led inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Oldham, sparking a political storm.

Musk’s remarks, which also criticized Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer for his handling of grooming gang prosecutions during his tenure as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), were met with widespread condemnation.

Streeting, speaking on BBC’s *Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg*, defended Phillips’ record, stating, "It is a disgraceful smear of a great woman who has spent her life supporting victims of violence."

Streeting highlighted Phillips’ contributions to combating abuse, adding, "People like Keir Starmer and Jess Phillips have done the hard yards of locking up wife beaters, rapists, and paedophiles."

Political Fallout and Responses
Phillips and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper had earlier instructed Oldham Council to launch a local inquiry into historic child sexual abuse cases, a decision criticized by both Conservative MPs and Musk.

Critics have called for a national inquiry, with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch labeling the issue a "rape gangs scandal."

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp echoed calls for greater accountability but distanced himself from inflammatory remarks made by other Conservatives.

Child sexual exploitation by grooming gangs has been the subject of numerous investigations in England.

High-profile cases in Rotherham, Telford, and Rochdale revealed systemic failures in protecting vulnerable children and prompted public outrage.

An inquiry in Rotherham found that 1,400 children were abused over 16 years, predominantly by British Pakistani men, while a Telford investigation uncovered abuse involving up to 1,000 girls over 40 years.

The 2022 Child Sexual Abuse Inquiry consolidated findings from various reports and issued 20 recommendations to address abuse.

However, none of these recommendations have been implemented, according to Professor Alexis Jay, who led the inquiry.
