Jaguar Land Rover Refutes Claims That Range Rovers Are the UK's Most-Stolen Vehicle
Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell has refuted claims that the company’s Range Rovers are the most stolen cars in the UK.
Despite reports linking the vehicles to high insurance costs, Mardell argued that insurers are not considering all available data when setting prices.
In response to difficulties some drivers faced in securing insurance, JLR launched its own insurance last year.
Mardell expressed frustration over allegations that specifically target JLR following a Bloomberg report citing UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency data, which stated the Range Rover Velar had the highest thefts until March 2023.
He emphasized the broader issue of organized car theft in the UK and pointed out that Range Rover thefts had decreased by 27% from the previous year. With the new Range Rover model, only 11 out of 12,800 sold cars were stolen.
JLR has committed £10 million to vehicle security enhancements and has already spent £15 million on upgrading older models to deter keyless thefts. The updates include anti-cloning technology for car keys, and the company is funding police analysts and working to bolster security at ports.
Mardell criticized slow industry responses to data and called for the criminalization of technologies used in thefts, working alongside the government to push for legal changes.
