Entente Cordiale Anniversary: UK and France Honor Friendship with Guard Swap
On Monday, the United Kingdom (UK) and France celebrated their long-standing friendship through a unique ceremony in which troops from both countries swapped places for the changing of the guard.
This historic event took place at the Élysée Palace in Paris, where British troops from Number 7 Company of the Coldstream Guards participated, and at Buckingham Palace in London, where French Republican Guard members took part.
This marks a first for France as the non-Commonwealth country to ever take part in the ceremony in London, and a first for the UK as the foreign state to have guarded the French presidential residence.
The Entente Cordiale, a series of four agreements signed on April 8, 1804, was the catalyst for this friendly exchange.
These agreements aimed to put an end to hostilities and improve diplomatic relations between the UK and France, settling colonial disputes.
Furthermore, the Entente Cordiale paved the way for diplomatic cooperation against Germany in the decade leading up to World War One.
French President Emmanuel Macron graced the ceremony in Paris with his presence, while the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh represented King Charles III in London, as he continues his cancer treatment.
This symbolic event serves as a reminder of the strong bond between the UK and France, which has endured for over a century.
