Who is going on strike in August and for how long

Workers in many sectors are ramping up their calls for better pay and conditions, particularly as the cost-of-living crisis starts to bite.

Saturday 13 August

• 24-hour walkout by members of the Aslef union, affecting Arriva Rail London, Avanti West Coast, Crosscountry, Greater Anglia (including Stansted Express), Great Western, Hull Trains, LNER, London Overground, Southeastern and West Midlands Trains
• Unite members employed by DHL in Scotland and Northern Ireland will strike, hitting supplies to Sainsbury's stores

Sunday 14 August

• Unite members employed by DHL in Scotland and Northern Ireland will strike, hitting supplies to Sainsbury's stores

Monday 15 August

• Unite members employed by DHL in Scotland and Northern Ireland will strike, hitting supplies to Sainsbury's stores

Friday 19 August

Among those balloting for strikes:


Nurses will start voting on strike action next month. The ballot opens on 15 September and lasts for four weeks.

The Communication Workers' Union says it is preparing a ballot for members across Capita O2 and Tesco Mobile partnerships.

Bus drivers in north London are balloting for industrial action.

More than 1,400 bus drivers employed by Arriva are balloting for strikes until 26 August.


Among the ongoing disputes:


Planned industrial action among council staff at Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council in Northern Ireland has been put on hold for talks. They were due to go on strike from 10 August.

Refuse workers in Surrey are seeking better pay - talks are under way.

A dispute between bus drivers and engineers employed by Stagecoach Merseyside is ongoing.
