In the backdrop of
Donald Trump's election as US president, which casts uncertainty over climate initiatives, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the unique opportunity for Britain to lead in green investment.
Speaking at the Cop29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, Starmer underscored the potential for the UK to spearhead the global race in renewable energy, including investments in carbon capture, hydrogen, and offshore wind.
As one of only two G7 leaders at the summit, Starmer aims to attract international investors by launching new financial instruments on the London Stock Exchange.
The UK government also introduced additional subsidies for offshore wind developers.
Starmer's foreign agenda, including a stop in Paris and talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, seeks to solidify the UK's commitment to climate goals and support for Ukraine amid geopolitical shifts.
At the summit, Starmer plans to outline the UK's emissions reduction targets, meeting recommendations to cut emissions by 81% from 1990 levels by 2035.
His international engagements reflect a focus on economic growth and immigration, aligning with domestic and international policy priorities.
