UK Deploys Surveillance Flights in Effort to Locate Hamas Hostages"
The UK has initiated unarmed surveillance flights over the Middle East to help locate hostages believed to be held by Hamas, according to the Ministry of Defence. While the total number of British hostages is unclear, five UK citizens are currently missing.
Asserting that the safety of British nationals is a top priority, the MoD announced these intelligence-gathering missions would cover the airspace above Israel and Gaza. These operations are set to involve Shadow R1 aircraft from the Royal Air Force and will focus exclusively on aiding hostage rescue efforts, with information being provided to the relevant authorities.
The US has also engaged in similar activities, deploying unarmed drones over Gaza earlier in the month to aid hostage recovery, complemented by advisory support to Israeli partners.
Amid these developments, a ceasefire in Gaza was broken with resumed hostilities, leading to the IDF targeting over 400 Hamas sites. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Gaza's health ministry reporting approximately 193 deaths due to recent Israeli strikes and over 15,200 fatalities since hostilities began on October 7 with a Hamas-initiated attack.
