Irish rock band U2 will be honored with the Ivors Academy Fellowship, recognizing their significant contributions to songwriting and music.
Irish rock band U2 is set to receive the Ivors Academy Fellowship at the upcoming Ivors Awards, scheduled for May 22, 2025, at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London.
This accolade is the highest honor bestowed by the UK-based association, recognizing exceptional contributions to songwriting and music.
Formed in Dublin in 1976, U2 comprises members Bono (lead vocals), The Edge (guitar and keyboards), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums).
The band's songwriting is celebrated for its emotional authenticity and powerful messages, addressing themes such as social unrest, human rights, love, faith, war, politics, and religion.
Notable hits include 'I Will Follow,' 'Pride (In The Name of Love),' 'I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,' and 'With or Without You.'
Throughout their career, U2 has sold over 175 million records worldwide and garnered numerous accolades, including four Ivor Novello Awards.
They will be the first Irish songwriters to receive the Ivors Academy Fellowship, joining the ranks of previous honorees such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, Kate Bush, and Bruce Springsteen—the latter being the first international songwriter to receive the honor in 2024.
The Ivors Academy, established in 1944, serves as the UK's professional association for songwriters and composers, aiming to empower members, champion their rights, and celebrate the highest achievements in music creation.
The Ivors Awards, inaugurated in 1956, are among the most prestigious accolades in the music industry, honoring excellence in songwriting and screen composition.
The 2025 Ivors Awards ceremony will feature a pre-lunch drinks reception, a three-course lunch, and the awards presentation, celebrating outstanding achievements in songwriting and composing.
U2's forthcoming recognition with the Ivors Academy Fellowship underscores their enduring impact on the music industry and their influential role in addressing both personal and universal themes through their songwriting.
