Margaret Miles-Bramwell, the founder of Slimming World, has passed away at the age of 76 at her home in Mallorca, surrounded by family.
Known for growing the business from a single weight loss group in Alfreton, Derbyshire, to a network of over 3,500 consultants, Miles-Bramwell's work revolutionized weight loss support in the UK. She founded Slimming World in 1969, aiming to provide a respectful and non-judgmental environment for those struggling with weight.
In 2009, she was awarded an OBE for her services to the health of the British public.
Slimming World, which employs 400 staff at its headquarters, described Miles-Bramwell as a “loving and much-loved” daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Managing director Lisa Salmon praised her leadership, stating that Miles-Bramwell's passion, humor, and commitment to doing the right thing shaped the company.
The firm emphasized that its core principles, focused on treating individuals with respect and dignity, were inspired by Miles-Bramwell's own struggles with weight from childhood.
During an earlier interview, Miles-Bramwell reflected on her journey, stating that the early weight loss programs often relied on humiliation.
She was driven to create a more compassionate and supportive approach to help people with their weight issues.
Throughout her career, she remained Chairwoman of Slimming World until her death.
The company paid tribute to her lasting impact, noting that her contributions touched the lives of millions, including staff and consultants.
The firm also extended condolences to her family, particularly her late husband Tony, who passed away in 2021.
