Tragic Climbing Accident on Ben Nevis Leaves One Dead and Another Injured
A 22-year-old man has died following a fall while climbing on Scotland's highest peak, with rescue operations complicated by challenging weather conditions.
A climbing incident on Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the UK, resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man and serious injuries to his climbing partner on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the Moonlight Gully area of the mountain during a climbing expedition.
Emergency services, including the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team (LMRT) and Police Scotland, were alerted around 5 PM to assist the injured climbers.
Upon arrival, rescuers treated a 30-year-old man who had sustained serious injuries but was able to move further down the hill.
Due to adverse weather conditions and treacherous terrain, the LMRT suspended the recovery operation for the deceased climber, resuming their efforts the following morning.
A spokesperson for the rescue team expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased and thanked the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter R151 and Police Scotland MRT North Division for their assistance during the operation.
According to a report from Police Scotland, the climbers, both believed to be from England, encountered difficulties while navigating the challenging sections of the North face of Ben Nevis.
Following the operation, the injured climber was transported to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
Police confirmed that the body of the 22-year-old climber was recovered, and the next-of-kin have been notified of the death.
A formal report regarding the incident will be submitted to the procurator fiscal as part of the ongoing investigation.
