The UK has designated Hamas' political wing as a terrorist organization, but it has not labeled the entire organization as such
The UK is set to classify Hizb ut-Tahrir, an Islamism supporting group, as a terrorist entity. Home Secretary James Cleverly announced the plan, making it illegal to join or support the group.
According to Cleverly, Hizb ut-Tahrir is antisemitic and encourages terrorism, having publicly supported Hamas’ violent actions against Israel on October 7.
Parliament will vote on this proposal within the week, with the ban expected to take effect by Friday. This move aims to limit the group's activities, which the Home Office calls an international Sunni Islamist political organization.
Under UK law, affiliation with a banned group could lead to up to 14 years in prison and a fine of £5,000. Countries such as Germany, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have already outlawed Hizb ut-Tahrir.
