OpenAI Unveils Autonomous AI Agent 'Operator' Capable of Completing Web-based Tasks
AI tool announced by OpenAI can autonomously perform internet tasks such as booking services and online shopping.
OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has introduced a novel AI assistant named 'Operator' that is designed to autonomously perform tasks on the internet.
The introduction took place during a live demonstration, where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman showcased Operator's capabilities in using a web browser to execute tasks assigned by users.
Such tasks include booking a restaurant table or conducting online shopping based on a shared photo of a shopping list.
Mr. Altman highlighted that Operator represents an early research preview of the technology and will initially be accessible to subscribers of OpenAI’s Pro subscription service, priced at 200 dollars per month, within the United States.
He indicated OpenAI's intent to enhance the tool's functionalities, reduce its costs, and gradually expand its availability.
OpenAI also plans to introduce more AI agents in the near future.
This development is part of a broader interest within the technology industry in deploying AI agents that can potentially transform productivity.
Industry experts have pointed out that these tools could augment various jobs by undertaking mundane, routine tasks.
This narrative contrasts with concerns about potential job disruptions due to the adoption of AI technologies.
In related developments, Annika Bizon, Samsung UK and Ireland’s director of mobile experience, shared insights on the integration of AI in Samsung's new S25 smartphone line.
She stressed that AI's role is to enhance human productivity rather than replace it.
Bizon emphasized that the evolution of AI tools is fundamentally about improving personal and professional tasks, equating the progress to the shift from traditional encyclopedias to internet search engines.
These advancements underscore the rapid evolution of AI technologies and their growing integration into daily activities, driving discussions about their impact on work and productivity.
