UK to Ban Social Media for Under-16s Under Landmark Online Safety Expansion
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced plans to ban social media access for children under 16, citing concerns over harmful content and addictive platform design. The policy, due to be fully in force by spring 2027, will rely on age verification tools including ID checks and facial scanning, and will apply to platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat, while messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal are exempt.
