Elon Musk has urged voters to elect Republican senators, arguing that a Democratic sweep of the House of Representatives, Senate and presidency in 2028 could allow the party to entrench itself permanently in power.
His appeal centres on securing 51 Republican senators in 2029. Musk argues that this would be enough to prevent the changes he fears, and that other electoral considerations should carry less weight.
He outlines three steps he suspects Democrats would take if they won control. First, he predicts they would make Washington, DC and Puerto Rico states to secure a substantial Senate majority. Second, he claims they would open the borders and grant legal status to everyone living unlawfully in the United States, with the aim of establishing a permanent electoral majority. Third, he predicts they would expand the Supreme Court to obtain an immediate majority among its justices.
Musk presents that prospective combination as a route to permanent one-party government and the end of meaningful democracy. His argument therefore casts Republican control of the Senate as a safeguard against institutional changes, rather than simply a preference over individual policies.
