King Charles Cancels Engagements Following Hospital Observation for Cancer Treatment Side Effects
Following a short hospital stay due to temporary side effects from cancer treatment, King Charles has postponed several engagements scheduled for the upcoming days.
King Charles required a brief period of observation in a hospital due to experiencing temporary side effects from his ongoing medical treatment for cancer, Buckingham Palace confirmed.
The Palace stated that after scheduled treatment on Thursday morning, the King experienced these side effects, which necessitated the postponement of his scheduled engagements for that afternoon.
The monarch returned to Clarence House later that day and, acting on medical advice, rescheduled his diary for Friday, apologizing to those who may be affected by the changes.
Palace sources characterized the situation as a minor setback, emphasizing a positive outlook on the King’s health trajectory.
King Charles, 76, was diagnosed with cancer in February 2024 after further investigation was conducted during treatment for a benign prostate condition.
Since his diagnosis, he has been undergoing weekly treatment while maintaining a significant schedule of public engagements.
In recent weeks, the King has actively participated in various high-profile events.
Notably, on March 13, he hosted a reception for WaterAid at Buckingham Palace, attended by fitness influencer Joe Wicks.
On March 17, he met with the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, in London.
During a visit to Northern Ireland from March 19 to 21, the King and Queen participated in events that included public performances and meetings with local community members.
This segment of his agenda culminated in a meeting in Banbridge with representatives from the Game of Thrones experience, among other local businesses.
In the days leading up to his hospitalization, the King continued to engage in royal duties, including an investiture ceremony where he knighted several notable figures, including actor Sir Stephen Fry and athlete Dina Asher-Smith on March 25. He also attended a reception hosted by the Queen at Clarence House, unveiling the Queen’s Reading Room Medal awarded to individuals supporting local storytelling initiatives.
The King’s hectic agenda continued with an exhibition at Somerset House celebrating soil and its benefits, demonstrating his commitment to environmental issues.
He had been scheduled to receive credentials from ambassadors on Thursday afternoon and to participate in engagements in Birmingham on March 28, which have since been postponed.
Following his diagnosis, the King has made efforts to prioritize his health while balancing his responsibilities.
His engagements are developed in close consultation with his medical team, who are involved in decisions regarding his public presence.
Despite the recent hospital visit, the King is expected to fulfill his planned state visit to Italy from April 7 to 10, which will mark a historic occasion as he intends to address both houses of the Italian Parliament, a first for a British monarch.
