Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has become Formula One’s youngest world champion at the age of 20, securing the title with four races still to run after finishing third in the Mexican Grand Prix.
The Italian breaks the record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first world championship with Red Bull in 2010. Antonelli’s title lowers that age benchmark by more than three years.
Third place in Mexico was enough to settle the championship before the season’s final four races. The result also ends a long wait for an Italian world champion: Antonelli is the first to take the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
