Immigration Lawyers in the UK Face Threats Amid Social Media Circulation
Immigration lawyers in the UK fear for their safety after their offices appeared on a list circulated on social media, prompting police to advise precautionary measures. The list was published on Telegram with anti-migration sentiment and has been widely shared. Despite threats, some lawyers remain defiant while police mobilize nearly 6,000 officers to respond to potential disorder.
BBC News reporters Eleanor Lawrie and Aidan McNamee have revealed that immigration lawyers in the UK are fearing for their safety after their offices appeared on a list circulated on social media.
The list, initially published on Telegram with the phrase 'no more immigration' and other anti-migration sentiment, has been shared thousands of times.
The Telegram group was created last week, shortly after an attack in Southport, and quickly grew to 15,000 members.
False rumors suggesting the Southport attack suspect was an asylum seeker have fueled recent disorders across several UK towns and cities.
Lawyers report receiving threats and being advised by police to work from home, board up office windows, and install fireproof letterboxes.
Despite threats, some lawyers remain defiant.
The Law Society supports these solicitors, noting that threats also endanger their clients.
Police are preparing for potential disorder with nearly 6,000 public order officers mobilized and at least 30 gatherings planned for Wednesday.
