Harrods Appoints Survivors' Advocate Following Al Fayed Misconduct Allegations
Dame Jasvinder Sanghera to Support Survivors Amidst Extensive Abuse Claims Against Former Owner
Harrods has named Dame Jasvinder Sanghera, a renowned human rights activist, as an advocate for survivors amid allegations of sexual misconduct by its late former owner, Mohamed Al Fayed.
Accused by more than 20 women in a BBC documentary, Al Fayed, who passed away last year at 94, allegedly committed numerous acts of sexual assault over a period exceeding 30 years at various locations including Harrods, the Ritz Hotel Paris, and Fulham FC.
Since these allegations surfaced, law firm Leigh Day has reportedly been contacted by over 100 women, while a larger group representing more than 400 alleged victims and witnesses has also come forward.
Harrods stated that Dame Sanghera's appointment extends their claims process, offering counseling and covering reasonable legal fees for claimants.
In her role, Dame Sanghera aims to meet as many survivors as possible, helping them navigate the compensation process and providing trauma-informed support.
Harrods, expressing their deep remorse, acknowledged a past failure to address these allegations during Al Fayed's ownership, and emphasized their commitment to rectifying these issues through a transparent and independent process.
