Over 40,000 users unable to access the platform as Elon Musk attributes disruptions to coordinated online attacks.
Elon Musk, CEO of the social media platform X, announced that the site was the target of a "massive cyber attack" following significant outages affecting users globally.
On March 10, 2025, reports indicated that more than 40,000 users experienced access issues, according to Downdetector, a website that monitors service disruptions.
Musk detailed the situation in a post on the platform, stating, "There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X." He suggested the attack involved considerable resources, potentially indicating involvement from a large group or even a nation-state.
Musk has previously characterized similar incidents as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, which aim to render a website inoperable by overwhelming it with excessive traffic.
The outages began early in the day, with user complaints peaking around 10 AM in the United Kingdom, followed by another wave at 2 PM, when approximately 8,000 users reported issues accessing the service.
Overall, the outages reportedly lasted more than six hours, affecting users worldwide.
Experts have commented on the possibility of a cyber attack targeting X. Isik Mater, the director of research at NetBlocks, discussed the likelihood of a denial of service attack, stating, "It’s difficult to be certain, but given the pattern of three observed outages, a denial service attack targeting X’s infrastructure can’t be ruled out.
It’s certainly one of the longest X/Twitter outages in our records."
As the situation unfolded, Musk's assertion that the platform is under regular attack was echoed in responses from users, suggesting concerns about efforts to silence the platform.
The incident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in major social media networks to cyber threats.
