Donald Trump calls Thailand ‘Thighland’ during sweat-soaked speech about washing machines

Donald Trump mispronounced Thailand as ‘Thighland’ during a sweat-soaked speech about washing machines. Speaking at a Whirlpool factory at Clyde in Ohio on Thursday, the President of the United States said: ‘Four five years ago this place was a disaster.

‘In 2017 Whirlpool won relief from the ITC (US International Trade Commission) once again. Once more, your foreign competitors moved their factories to prevent a level playing field, and to avoid liability.

‘Shifting production to Thighland, and to Vietnam – ‘ Trump then repeated himself to correct the pronunciation of Thailand, adding: ‘Two places that – I like their leaders very much – do they take advantage of the United States? Not so much anymore.’

Trump, who began to drip with sweat as his speech continued, made the blunder days after mispronouncing Yosemite National Park as ‘Yo-semite’ during an announcement on increased funding for the US National Parks system. And he even made time for a deprecating joke, saying he preferred old-fashioned lightbulbs to newer energy saving ones because they make him look ‘less orange.’

He previously raised eyebrows after misspelling ‘hamburgers’ as ‘hamberders.’ Trump used Thursday’s speech to present himself as a champion of the US manufacturing industry. Trump, 74, and presidential rival Joe Biden, 77, have both faced questions about their cognitive abilities, although both insist they are as sharp as ever.

He claimed his predecessor Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden had made a ‘disastrous assault’ on US workers by signing manufacturing deals with foreign countries.

It came as multiple polls showing Trump trailing Democratic presidential nominee Biden ahead of the November 3 presidential election. The president has been condemned over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has so far infected over 4.9million Americans and killed 160,000.

Trump claims that infection numbers and deaths will increase in the coming weeks, and is adamant that he will win re-election when the economy begins to lift-off again in the coming months.
